Foundation Stage

Autumn 2 (2017) - Bonfire Night

|

The children have enjoyed a week of learning about Bonfire night and the reason why we celebrate it. We talked about Guy Fawkes and his intentions. The children enjoyed creating pictures of fireworks and they also enjoyed mark making in the sparkly glitter in the outdoor area. The children all took turns to chat to their friends and teachers about their bonfire celebrations at home.

Autumn 1 (2017) - Bears

Our current topic is Bears. We have learned lots of facts about real bears such as Polar bears, Panda bears, Grizzly bears and Black bears. We also learned about teddy bears. The children all brought their favourite teddy bear from home and talked about their bears to their friends. Reception children learned about Paddington Bear and even made marmalade sandwiches!

Finger Time (2017)

We have started our 'Finger Time' sessions each Friday morning. This is a selection of activities on rotation, which lasts for 5 miniutes each and is designed to help strengthen the childrens finger muscles to get them ready to write. The activities include a wide range of things such as threading buttons, clipping pegs onto paper, posting counters into tubs, picking things up with tweezers, using scissors to snip, and making marks with pencils. The children really enjoy the activities each week. 

Welcome back! September 2017

The nursery children are settling in well. We have started Cheeky Monkey's Phase 1 Phonics and the children are thoroughly enjoying it. This week we have been learning the names of musical instruments and how to play them. This is alongside learning the jolly phonics actions and sounds.

Visit to St Mary's Church - June 2017

|

As part of our current RE topic 'The Church', we took the children to visit St Mary's Church. We showed the children around and looked at the Baptismal Font, the stations of the cross, the Tabernacle, and the statues. The children showed great reverance and were very well behaved in Church. They all enjoyed the visit and learned lots of new things.

Fire Station Visit - May 2017

As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we went on a visit to our local Fire Station on Hensingham. When we arrived, the firefighters introduced themselves and showed us around a fire engine. They talked to us about the ladders, hoses, special cutting equipment and their uniform. Then the firefighters allowed us to get up into the engine and sit on the seats, some of us pretended to drive! We tried on their special helmets with visors on and they were very heavy. After this, we went outside onto the carpark and waited safely while the firefighters brought the engine outside. We each had a go at switching the hose on and using it. It was lots of fun!

Walby Farm Park - March 2017

|

As part of our Spring and New Life topic, we visited Walby Farm Park near Carlisle. We went on a big bus and took a packed lunch with us. When we got there the lady showed us around the big barn and introduced us to lots of animals such as pigs, horses, donkeys, lambs, rabbits and ginuea pigs. We enjoyed petting and stroking the animals. We also watched a ferret race too. After lunch we had a special treat which was to play in the soft play area before we came back to school. 

World Book Day - March 2017

The children have thoroughly enjoyed the day. They all dressed up as characters from their favourite stories. The theme in the Foundation Stage was from the story 'Aliens Love Underpants'. The children took part in lots of lovely activities based around this book. The activities ranged from making a space ship outside, decorating alien biscuits, making aliens from play dough, colouring in and alien rhyming activities. The children then enjoyed a special treat for snack which was space raider crisps to link with our theme.

Shrove Tuesday - Pancakes

Today we have learned all about Shrove Tuesday (Pancake day). We talked about using all the things up in our cupboards before Lent. We talked about making promises for Lent and about giving things up.

The children throughly enjoyed eating pancakes for their snack. Some of the children had syrup on, and some of them had sugar and lemon on.

Chinese New Year Day

Today we have celebrated Chinese New Year in the foundation stage. All the children and the teachers came to school in brightly coloured clothes. We made dragon masks using paper plates and lots of different craft materials. We went to the hall and took part in Chinese dragon dancing. We also enjoyed special Chinese food for our snack, this included rice, noodles, prawn crackers, spring rolls and a selection of Chinese dips and sauces. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Chinese culture and customs.

Christmas 2016 in the Foundation Stage

Christmas has been lots of fun this year, we have been making lots of lovely christmas crafts. We have also been learning the Christmas Story in RE and we have enjoyed performing our stage production 'A Miracle in Town'. We also enjoyed our trip to the La'al Ratty at Ravenglass, where we met Santa and received a present.

Diwali Day - Autumn Term

We were very lucky to have a special visit from a gentleman called Steve Hopkins (Hindu name - Sakhya), who came to do Diwali workshops with the children. There was opportunities to dress up, play instruments and listen to stories about Rama and Sita. He used characters from various Disney films to portray these Hindu characters.

Autumn 1: Welcome back!

This term the Foundation Stage children will spend the first couple of weeks settling in and getting to know their teachers and friends. They will learn the class rules and routines.

Our first topic is all about colours and shapes. We will be taking part in lots of fun and creative activities.

Foundation Stage end of year trips

The children have thoroughly enjoyed their end of year trips to Planet Play and Billy Bears. They have all worked very well throughout the year and certainly deserved the nice treat!

Olympic Day

|

Today, the Foundation Stage children took part in an Olympic dance workshop. The children chose to represent Mexico in the workshop. We decorated the classrooms with Mexican flags and banners, and also enjoyed trying some Mexican snack. The dance teacher showed us a dance routine to the beat of Mexican music and we performed it in a whole school assembly at the end of the day. The children thoroughly enjoyed it!

World Book Day

|

Today we have celebrated World Book Day. The children have all made a fantastic effort and all look extremely good! The teachers in the Foundation Stage decided to have a Peter Pan theme. We have made treasure maps and had a colouring competition.

Chinese New Year

|

This week is Chinese New Year. The Foundation Stage children celebrated this special occasion by having fried rice, prawn crackers, sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce for special snack. They thoroughly enjoyed tasting the food!

The children have watched videos, slideshows and listened to the teachers and stories explaining how Chinese people celebrate this special occasion. Have a chat with your child and ask them if they can remember anything from class? 

On Friday 12th February the Foundation Stage children put together an assesmbly on all of the things that they had learned about Chinese New Year!

Shrove Tuesday

|

We talked to the children about preparing for Lent. We learned the real meaning of Pancake Day and why it is celebrated. The children each made a pancake and ate it for their snack.

The Gingerbread Man

|

As part of our Traditional Tales topic, we read the story of 'The Gingerbread Man' and had a baking day, where we made our own gingerbread men. The children thoroughly enjoyed it.

Take a look at Reception making porridge just like the bears in the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears.'

Autumn term - effort and achievement winners

Santa Express visit

|

On Monday 1st December the Foundation Stage visited the Laal Ratty, Ravenglass. The children went on the Santa Express train and met Father Christmas. We all had a magical day, the children has lots of fun!

Teddy Bear's Picnic - Tuesday 24th November

|

On Tuesday 24th November as part of the Foundation Stage 'bears' topic, the children could bring their favourite teddy bear into class. This was to enjoy and take part in a teddy bears picnic. The children and their bear had a tasty picnic for snack - jam sandwiches, crisps and milk.

Wear it pink or Halloween!

Children came into school today wearing pink clothing or a halloween costume. All of the money that has been donated will be going to the breast cancer charity. Thank you for all of your donations!

Pets at Home

The Foundation Stage children visited Pets at Home Store in Workington as part of their topic. Reception visited the store on Thursday 8th October and on Nursery visited on Friday 9th October.
