Phonics

In the Foundation Stage we have a phonics session every morning from 9.00am that lasts around 25 minutes. We use the Letters and Sounds document to plan our Phonics lessons. Each member of the Foundation Stage staff plans, teaches and delivers a different phase of phonics.

All of the Nursery children are currently working in 'Cheeky Monkey's' phase 1 phonics group which is taught by Miss Hillon & Miss Buchanan. They are learning to listen carefully to the sounds around us, explore different sounds and beginning to listen to initial sounds in words. We use the 'Jolly Phonics' actions with each sound - the children love this!

The Reception class has children working in a range of phases from 1 to 4. The children will learn a new sound every day in phonics as well as consolidating previous taught sounds.

At St Mary's we have high expectations in writing therefore the Reception children are taught how to write from the Autumn Term. We do this through our phonics lessons, as part of the morning tasks and during Literacy.

We have 'Little Lion's' phase 2 phonics group which is taught by Mrs Durkin, 'Terrific Tigers' phase 3 phonics group which is taught by Mrs McAdam and Miss Cann. Mrs Daly teaches 'Ellie Elephant' Phase 4 phonics and Miss Dillon, our Year 1 teacher takes some of the Reception children for phase 5 phonics.

Have a look at our photographs -we learn lots in phonics!
