At St Mary's we follow a 'topic-based' approach to the curriculum. This means that wherever possible, we group our subjects around a topic. The topics we choose depend on two factors: what areas of the National Curriculum we must cover and the interests and needs of the children. For example, the infant children love stories about pirates and dragons - there is so much great learning that can take place within such a topic, it would be a shame to miss out on this idea!
Not all subjects can naturally 'fit' within a topic. Our Religious Education syllabus does not usually link with the class topics and so it is taught separately. Not everything in Maths links effectively with a topic and so this often runs separately too, but links are made whenever possible.
Use the links in the menu to the left to explore our whole school topic plans and subject policies. We have created class pages so that you can see some of our topics in action too.
