We use the 'Letters and Sounds' document to plan our phonics lessons in Year 1. Most children start Phase 5 in the Autumn term but there is also a small phase 3/4 group who are working on consolidating their understanding of the most common sounds. Phonics is taught every morning at 9:00 am and lasts 25 minutes. The children review their learning of previous sounds first before being introduced to a new sound or spelling pattern. Each session combines blending sounds for reading and segementing them for spelling.
In July the children will be tested using the Phonics Screening Check materials. Children who do not meet the pass mark will be retested in Year 2.
Spellings are tested every week and are usually based on a spelling pattern from that week's sessions although occasionally we test the children on their spelling of high frequency 'sight words'.
The children in Year 1 all have a reading book and diary that go home every night. Parents, teachers and other staff make comments in the diary and books are changed once read successfully. The books are drawn from various schemes, including Oxford reading Tree, and are banded into levels using the 'Book Bands for Guided Reading' document. We have a termly visit from the School Library Service Van and the children all chose books to keep and read in class. We celebrate our love of reading every year when we dress up for 'World Book Day'
