Writing

The children in Year 1 love writing and they write every day.  Sometimes this is in their English work and their writing will be based on the books we have shared.  The children might write a letter to say thank you for our class treats, a diary entry by The Rainbow Fish or a character description of The Gruffalo.  At other times the children are using their writing skills to write in a cross-curricular way.  For example the children have written descriptions of their friends which linked to our 'Ourselves' topic and Autumn poetry to link to our 'Seasonal Changes' topic.

We do lots of 'Talk for Writing' before we get started.  The children like to work with talk partners to discuss characters and settings, or role play scenes from stories. We also learn stories verbally which helps retell stories and then we can 'innovate' the stories and write our own versions.
