ELSA

What is ELSA?

There may be children in school who are facing challenges that detract from their ability to engage in their learning. These children may need support with their emotions. ELSA is a programme that has been developed by educational psychologists who recognise children learn better and are happier when their emotional needs are addressed.

ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant and ours is Mrs Susan O'Neill. Our ELSA in school works with individuals or small groups if it is appropriate, to promote their emotional well-being by developing and delivering individualised support programmes.

The kinds of work covered are:

  • recognising our emotions
  • loss and bereavement
  • friendships
  • anger management
  • self-esteem
  • separation
