Picture News
At St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, we are incredibly passionate about teaching. We want to provide our children with resources to create engaging and exciting lessons, allowing opportunities for children to learn about our world, develop independence, resilience, respect and unlock their own drive and passion for learning.
Teaching the news not only provides great content and stimulus and grips children’s attention, it is also something that the children can impact. It is current, happening now and so their voice is given meaning and purpose. It is our world and we all matter.
We believe in giving children a voice and encouraging them to use it to impact things they are inspired by or feel passionately about.
Every week, we share Picture News in classes and in a weekly assembly. The excellent online resources enable our children to engage really well with the images and the topics covered, which are always interesting, current and relevant. The weekly big picture is also displayed prominently in school.
Picture News is one of the ways that we deliver the work work we do in school on British Values and Protected Characteristics. It enables us to support our children on issues of the day in a planned and age-appropriate way.
Please see below for the stories that we have covered so far this year.
