The Graduated Approach
What is the Graduated Approach?
The Graduated Approach-sometimes called the Graduated Response-is used when identifying a child who may have a Special Educational Need or has already been identified as having a Special Educational Need.
It follows a cycle of :
- Assess-using a range of assessment strategies to identify the needs of the child.
- Plan-using the assessment information, plan provision to be put in place.
- Do-carry out the provision.
- Review- monitor the progress of the child.
As a child's needs are identified the cycle becomes more targeted to removing the barriers to their learning.
If progress is made and support is no longer required the child may not need to continue through the cycle.
The process is constantly under review and the class teacher and/or SENCO will hold meetings with parents to discuss progress.
